Commerzbank: Euro Caught Between Energy Shocks and ECB Rate Expectations on July 24

According to Commerzbank economist Michael Pfister on July 24, an agreement ending U.S.-Iran conflict may benefit the eurozone economy but does not necessarily signal strength for the euro. If oil prices decline due to reduced tensions, market expectations for European Central Bank rate hikes could ease, removing support for the currency. Pfister noted this dynamic was evident after the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in June, when a sharp oil price drop provided minimal euro support. He added that current ECB rate hike bets are helping offset near-term oil price surges from recent conflict escalation.
