Energy Price Spike Concerns ECB as Monetary Decision Expected Today, Market Bets on September Rate Hike

According to Helaba analysts, rising energy prices amid heightened tensions in the Arabian Gulf are unlikely to satisfy central bankers, with the European Central Bank set to announce its monetary policy decision later today, July 23. While there are currently no clear signals of an imminent ECB rate hike, analysts note they are awaiting market signals to determine whether the next meeting in September will send a tightening signal. Money markets are currently pricing in a 21 basis point rate hike from the ECB in September. Helaba expects the central bank's forward guidance to remain unchanged, with the ECB continuing to make decisions on a meeting-by-meeting basis rather than pre-committing to a specific rate path.
