China's H1 2026 Merchandise Imports Rise 22.1%, Outpacing Exports as Ministry Pledges Continued Market Opening

According to China's Ministry of Commerce, the country's merchandise imports grew 22.1% year-over-year in the first half of 2026, significantly outpacing export growth, an official said at a State Council Information Office briefing on July 28. The ministry does not deliberately pursue trade surpluses and remains committed to expanding imports, said He Shaojun, director of the Foreign Trade Division. China maintains its position as the world's second-largest import market. To broaden import channels, the ministry launched the "Export to China" brand initiative, planning to hold more than 100 import promotion events annually, with numerous Chinese enterprises signing preliminary purchase agreements with foreign counterparts at overseas events.
