China's Defense Ministry Says Japan's Military Expansion is Making Asia-Pacific a 'Powder Keg' on June 16

China's Defense Ministry spokesperson Chen Xi responded on June 16 to Japan's recent defense white paper, stating that Japan is fabricating threats and using them as cover for military expansion. According to the Defense Ministry, Japan has significantly increased military spending, eased restrictions on weapons exports, deployed mid- and long-range missiles, expanded offensive military capabilities, and pursued amendments to its pacifist constitution. The ministry said an accelerating militarized Japan poses a major security risk to the Asia-Pacific region.
