Anthropic Urges Mandatory AI Safety Testing and State-Level Regulation Ahead of IPO

Anthropic issued policy recommendations to the U.S. Congress on June 10, calling for mandatory independent third-party safety testing of advanced AI models before deployment. The AI company also opposed replacing state-level AI regulations entirely with federal law, arguing that if federal rules fail to address catastrophic AI risks including national security and biotech threats, states should retain regulatory authority.

Anthropric separately urged Congress and state governments to upgrade unemployment insurance systems to address potential large-scale job displacement from AI automation. The company noted current U.S. unemployment systems use outdated technology and are unprepared for widespread labor market disruption, citing a Reuters/Ipsos poll showing approximately 50% of Americans fear AI could cause job loss.
