25 Tech Giants Including Nvidia Sign Open Letter Against U.S. Restrictions on Open-Source AI on July 24

On July 24, Microsoft published an open letter titled "Open Weights and American AI Leadership," signed by 25 companies and organizations including Nvidia, Meta, IBM, Dell, Hugging Face, Mistral, and a16z, calling on the U.S. government not to restrict open-source AI models. The letter argues that open-source models lower industry barriers, prevent market monopolization by few giants, and do not pose greater security risks than proprietary systems.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang posted his first-ever X account message supporting the letter, emphasizing that open-source models strengthen security and enable countries to build autonomous AI capabilities. The letter was triggered partly by Moonshot AI's release of the Kimi K3 open-source model on July 16, which outperformed leading proprietary models from Anthropic and OpenAI in benchmark tests while charging three to five times less.
