Yann LeCun Disputes Silicon Valley AI Leadership Claim, Cites Global Distribution of Key Technologies

According to Beating’s monitoring, Yann LeCun, a Turing Award winner and former Meta chief AI scientist, disputed on X venture capitalist Elad Gil’s claim that Silicon Valley leads the world in AI research by 3 to 4 months. LeCun countered with a list of major AI technologies originating outside Silicon Valley: Attention mechanism (Montreal), PyTorch (New York), AlphaGo and AlphaFold (London), DeepSeek (Hangzhou), and Meta’s Llama models (Paris and New York). He also cited DINO (Paris) and JEPA, developed across multiple locations. LeCun concluded that Silicon Valley’s lead exists only in “specific topics it is obsessed with.”
