Visa Estimates $36 Trillion Wealth Transfer Over 20 Years, Half Cerulli's $105 Trillion Projection

According to a report released last week, Visa Business and Economic Insights estimates $36 trillion in baby boomer wealth will pass to Gen X and millennials over the next 20 years—significantly lower than Cerulli Associates' $105 trillion projection through 2048. The nearly $70 trillion gap reflects methodological differences: Visa, a payments company, focuses on inherited wealth spent by consumers, excluding retirement spending ($16 trillion), debts ($5 trillion), the top 1% of fortunes ($28 trillion), taxes and charity ($8 trillion). Cerulli, a financial research firm, estimates total wealth transfers across all generations and wealth groups, including significant fortunes from ultra-wealthy families.
