Vandenberg Space Force Station Tears Down Historic SLC-6 Towers on June 16 for SpaceX Missions

On June 16, demolition charges brought down the access tower, mobile service tower, and assembly building at Space Launch Complex-6 (SLC-6) at Vandenberg Space Force Station in southern California, according to Ars Technica. The facility was historically used for the U.S. Air Force's crewed reconnaissance program and later planned as a West Coast launch site for the Space Shuttle.

The modernization paves the way for SpaceX to use SLC-6 for Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy missions. "By modernizing this historic footprint in partnership with our defense industrial base, we are building directly upon the foundation of our pioneers," said Col. James T. Horne III, commander of Space Launch Delta 30 at Vandenberg.
