U.S. Tech Layoffs Hit Highest Monthly Level in May Since August 2024

According to consulting firm Challenger Gray & Christmas, U.S. tech sector layoffs reached their highest monthly level in May since August 2024, before easing in June. The tech industry has cut roughly 140,000 employees across the country so far in 2026, more than any other sector. Artificial intelligence was cited as the primary reason for cuts for a fourth consecutive month, cited in about 23% of all job cut announcements in 2026.
