U.S. Tariff Refunds Hit $81 Billion After Supreme Court Struck Down Trump's IEEPA Duties in February

According to Treasury data reported by Agence France-Presse, U.S. tariff refunds totaled $81 billion in the fiscal year ending July 2026, up from $5 billion the previous year. The surge followed the Supreme Court's 6-3 decision in February that found Trump exceeded his authority by using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose broad tariffs. Most of the refunds were processed in May and June after the ruling obliged the government to return money to importers that had already paid. Total refund obligations are estimated between $149 billion and $166 billion, plus interest and administrative costs.
