According to Reuters, a US District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin approved Anthropic's $1.5 billion copyright settlement on July 20 in San Francisco, resolving claims over the AI company's acquisition, retention, and use of pirated books. The class action settlement covers approximately 500,000 eligible titles and addresses Anthropic's unauthorized downloading and retention of more than 7 million copies from pirate libraries before August 25, 2025. As part of the agreement, Anthropic is required to destroy the pirated libraries and derivative copies within 30 days of the final judgment.
