According to government disclosures, the U.S. federal government held approximately 328,372 BTC as of February 2026, making it the world's largest state holder of Bitcoin. The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, established by executive order in March 2025, mandates that Bitcoin seized through law enforcement cannot be sold and must be maintained as permanent reserve assets. However, disputes between the Treasury Department and Commerce Department over custody and operational control have delayed full implementation of the reserve framework as of mid-2026.
