U.S. Electricity Supply Hits Record 2,234 TWh in H1 2026, Up 3% as Data Centers Surge

According to Oil Price, citing Ember research and data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, American electricity supply reached a record 2,234 terawatt-hours in the first half of 2026, up 3% year-over-year. The surge marks the second consecutive year of all-time highs in both power generation and consumption.

Data centers are the primary driver of this growth. Goldman Sachs forecasts that U.S. data center electricity demand will more than double from 31 gigawatts in 2025 to 66 gigawatts by 2027, accounting for 8.5% of peak summer power demand by 2027, up from 4.1% last year.
