US and Qatar Plan to Unfreeze $60 Billion in Iranian Funds for Humanitarian Purchases

According to Wall Street Journal, the United States and Qatar are developing a plan to allow Iran to access a portion of its approximately $100 billion in frozen assets globally, with initial humanitarian purchases to begin with $60 billion held by Qatar. Under the arrangement announced June 20, Qatar will enable Iran's central bank to use thawed funds to purchase food, medicine, and other humanitarian goods, with the mechanism potentially serving as a template for unfreezing additional Iranian assets held elsewhere.
