U.S. Air Force MQ-9 Drone Fleet Declines from 165 to 135 Amid Iran and Yemen Operations

According to U.S. military website War Zone, the U.S. Air Force is urgently seeking to replenish MQ-9 drone inventory following losses of nearly 30 aircraft during operations against Iran and additional losses in missions against Houthi forces since early fiscal year 2026. The MQ-9A production has ended, forcing the Air Force to pursue unused inventory from General Atomics, though fewer than 10 aircraft are available for purchase. The MQ-9 fleet has contracted from 165 aircraft at the start of fiscal year 2026 to approximately 135 currently.
