According to shipping intelligence firm Kpler, two crude oil tankers carrying a combined 4 million barrels disabled tracking signals while transiting the Strait of Hormuz last week to evade Iranian attacks. The Basrah Energy, a very large crude carrier (VLCC), loaded 2 million barrels of Upper Zakum crude from Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) on May 1 and transited the strait on May 6, discharging cargo on May 8. Another VLCC, Kiara M, turned off its transponder while leaving the Persian Gulf on Sunday carrying 2 million barrels of Iraqi crude oil. The tanker’s discharge destination remains unclear.
