Toyota Narrows Gap on GM to 83,255 Vehicles in First Half 2026, Smallest Since 2021

According to a Cox Automotive forecast released Wednesday, Toyota U.S. sales are projected to rise 1% to 1.25 million vehicles in the first half of 2026, while General Motors sales are forecast to decline 7.2% to 1.33 million. The narrowing sales gap of 83,255 vehicles marks the smallest margin between the two automakers since Toyota topped GM in 2021. Senior economist Charlie Chesbrough at Cox Automotive noted that "at these rates, GM may be looking over their shoulder when we get to the year's end, that Toyota could potentially overtake them as the top selling manufacturer."
