Taiwan Considers Stricter AI Chip Export Controls to China Amid US Trade Talks

According to Bloomberg, Taiwan is considering stricter export controls on AI chips and servers sold to China as part of ongoing trade talks with the US. The move aims to combat semiconductor smuggling and align Taiwan's rules more closely with US export restrictions. Taiwan currently requires licenses mainly for shipments to Huawei Technologies and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC). Officials are discussing a threshold-based system similar to US curbs, under which Taiwan would restrict sales to China of AI chips above a certain processing threshold. Taiwan hosts many companies that assemble Nvidia chips into AI servers, so broader rules could affect those server makers.
