SK Group Plans New Semiconductor Plants Beyond Yongin Amid Rising Demand

According to SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won at the Nikkei Forum on June 10, the company is planning new semiconductor plants beyond its Yongin site as demand accelerates. Chey said the next facility could be located overseas if South Korea cannot provide necessary infrastructure including power, water, land, and workers. Potential domestic locations under discussion include Jangseong, Gwangju, and Onyang ahead of a June 29 government coordination discussion.

The Gyeonggi chip cluster plan targets 622 trillion won (approximately US$411 billion) in private investment by 2047, with SK hynix contributing about 122 trillion won (US$80.5 billion) toward the Yongin facility. The plan includes government support for 3 gigawatts of power to Yongin by 2030 and water supply by 2031.
