According to Optimism Analysis, Roelof Botha, a veteran investor from Sequoia Capital, joined SpaceX's board of directors today (June 18) as an independent director, bringing the board to 9 members. Botha, who shares South African roots with Elon Musk, previously served as PayPal's CFO, overseeing the company's 2002 IPO and its later sale to eBay. He is regarded as a key member of the influential "PayPal Mafia" and has since become one of the world's most influential venture investors, with extensive experience in fintech, healthcare, and cloud software.

Sequoia Capital invested in SpaceX in 2020, and Botha's appointment reflects the long-term shareholder's deepened involvement in company governance, leveraging his expertise in capital allocation, corporate governance, and strategic planning.
