According to Beating, Pope Leo XIV recently issued his first encyclical 'Magnifica Humanitas,' criticizing Elon Musk and Peter Thiel's transhumanism vision and warning against AI-driven threats to human dignity. The encyclical forbids delegating lethal military decisions to automated algorithms and calls for 'AI de-weaponization' to counter what the Pope describes as profit-driven AI development that enables digital slavery and exploitation through mass data collection and algorithmic manipulation.
Anthropic co-founder Christopher Olah attended the encyclical's release ceremony, standing alongside the Pope to directly pressure Silicon Valley AI developers on ethical constraints. The Pope emphasized that algorithms cannot provide moral justification for war and that transparency and public appeals processes must be ensured in military decisions, credit assessments, and public assistance programs. The Pope also apologized for the Catholic Church's historical failure to timely condemn slavery.
