According to Beating, Ryan Lopopolo, an OpenAI engineer and author of the Harness engineering methodology, has recently joined Google Cloud as Chief Engineer for Agentic Google Cloud Platform. Lopopolo's Harness engineering framework emphasizes providing AI agents with proper context, tools, permissions, evaluation metrics, and feedback loops to enable real participation in software development. During his time at OpenAI, he participated in an internal experiment where a team used Codex to build a product from an empty repository over five months, with the AI model generating over one million lines of code while humans focused on goal-setting and validation.
The move signals that Google Cloud is expanding beyond selling models and compute power to develop enterprise AI agent engineering capabilities.
