NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that 5 newly built city-owned supermarkets will offer 30% discounts on a basket of core everyday groceries, including all fresh produce, meat, seafood, and approximately 20 categories of pantry staples, dairy, and refrigerated items.
The discount will apply to all residents regardless of income and maintain predictable pricing that does not fluctuate weekly like private supermarkets. The city estimates this will reduce the average grocery bill by 15% per month, saving approximately $90 monthly or $1,000 annually per resident.
