Musk Predicts AI Will Surpass Human Intelligence in Five Years, Proposes Peer Review Model Over Government Regulation

According to The Economist interview published recently, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk predicted that artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence globally within approximately five years. In the same conversation, Musk proposed an alternative governance framework centered on industry peer review rather than government-led regulation. Under his proposal, major AI labs including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and xAI would conduct weekly safety meetings, review competing models before release, and collectively determine deployment decisions. Musk also criticized OpenAI's transformation from a nonprofit open-source organization to a closed-source enterprise valued at $800 billion, stating it deviated from its original mission.
