Microsoft Unveils Majorana 2 Quantum Chip Built With AI, Targets 2029 Commercial Deployment

According to Microsoft, the company unveiled Majorana 2 quantum chip on June 2 with an AI-assisted redesign that led it to believe it can deploy commercially useful quantum machines by 2029. The chip uses lead rather than aluminum, a material switch that improved performance measures by 1,000x. The timeline aligns with IBM's plan to deliver its large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computing system called Starling by 2029.

Microsoft shared data with the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency under confidentiality, addressing some scrutiny over the company's quantum research.
