Meta Begins 8,000 Global Layoffs, Singapore Staff Notified First on Wednesday

According to an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg, Meta began notifying roughly 8,000 employees worldwide on Wednesday that they were being laid off, with Singapore staff notified first at 4 a.m. local time. The cuts primarily affect engineering and product teams and are part of the company's efficiency push to redirect resources toward artificial intelligence. People familiar with the company's plans indicated additional layoffs could occur later in the year. Evercore analysts estimate the reductions will save approximately $3 billion, a fraction of Meta's projected $145 billion in AI capital expenditures for 2026.
