KBRA Warns ECB Rate Hike Risk Could Push Eurozone Into Stagflation; 25bp Increase Expected This Week

According to KBRA senior director Ken Egan on June 8, further interest rate increases by the European Central Bank could push the eurozone into unnecessary stagflation. Egan noted that while some tightening may be warranted to stabilize expectations, interest rates are a blunt tool for addressing supply shocks, especially amid weak growth. He highlighted that recent eurozone inflation rises are primarily driven by external energy prices rather than domestic overheating, and warned that excessive policy correction could transform energy shocks into stagflation risks. The ECB is expected to raise rates by 25 basis points this week.
