Japan May Become 'AI Colony' if It Falls Behind, Warns Digital Minister on June 5

According to Jin10, Japan's Digital Affairs Minister Matsumoto Hisashi warned on June 5 that Japan risks becoming a victim of 'new-form colonialism' if it fails to keep pace with rapid AI development. The warning was issued while defending a proposed amendment to Japan's personal data protection law, which would allow AI developers to use personal data—including medical and criminal records—for model training without individual consent. "We must advance AI development, or we will ultimately become an 'AI colony'," Matsumoto stated. Opposition parties have raised concerns about potential data breach risks.
