Japan Confirms Rare Earth Deposits at 6,000 Meters Offshore, Plans Large-Scale Test Mining in February 2027

According to Japan's Marine Science and Technology Agency (JAMSTEC), sampling conducted off Minami-Torishima island in January confirmed multiple rare earth elements including yttrium (approximately 30%) and neodymium (approximately 20%) at depths of around 6,000 meters. The agency extracted approximately 50 tons of seafloor sediment containing seawater. JAMSTEC plans to conduct a larger-scale deep-sea recovery test in February 2027 for about one month, with Japan's government targeting completion of a comprehensive commercial feasibility assessment by March 2027.
