A Reddit user discovered on July 25 that Anthropic's Claude share feature was indexing shared conversations on Google, exposing hundreds of chats containing sensitive data including crypto wallet credentials and apparent Social Security numbers. The root cause was a missing noindex meta tag in the share links. Although Anthropic's robots.txt file blocked the share URLs, Google's search crawler had already indexed the links from third-party posts and forums, making them discoverable in search results.
Anthropic added noindex tags on July 26, and Google began removing Claude results from search. However, Bing continued surfacing shared links as of publication. A GitHub repository has already archived 453 Claude conversations and 519 Grok chats from the exposed links, making permanent removal impossible.
