Home Invasions Rise to 20 in H1 2026, Now Most Common Crypto Wrench Attack: CertiK

According to CertiK, home invasions rose to 20 publicly reported incidents in the first half of 2026 from just one a year earlier, becoming the most common form of crypto wrench attacks. The blockchain security firm verified 52 wrench attacks worldwide in H1 2026, up 33.3% from 39 in the same period of 2025. Financial exposure linked to the attacks reached approximately $124.1 million, up from $10.5 million a year earlier.

Europe accounted for 39 of the 52 incidents, with France alone representing 33 cases, or nearly two-thirds of the global total. On July 2, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported authorities had recorded 77 crypto-linked kidnappings and extortion cases during H1 2026, up from 45 in all of 2025.
