Google Gemini API Breaks Compatibility on June 8, Legacy SDKs Will Error

According to Google, the Gemini Interactions API will undergo a breaking update. The new version becomes default on May 26, with the legacy version fully deprecated on June 8. Requests using Python or JavaScript SDK versions 1.x.x will return errors after that date.

Developers must modify two code paths: the response structure shifts from the outputs array to a more granular steps array for parsing text and function call results; and output configuration consolidates MIME types and image parameters into a unified response_format parameter, which now supports multi-modal outputs—text and audio simultaneously in a single request. SDK users can upgrade to version 2.0.0 or later for automatic migration.
