EU Orders Google to Open Android AI Features and Search Data to Third Parties

The European Commission today issued two binding technical measures under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) requiring Google to open critical Android system functions to third-party AI assistants and share anonymized search data with competing search engines and AI chatbots. Third-party AI assistants must gain equal access to Android capabilities currently available to Gemini, including voice activation and cross-app task execution. Google must establish transparent mechanisms for data access and pricing. Rollout begins January 2027 for search data sharing, with Android interoperability features opening to users by July 2027.
