ECB Picks 36 Firms for 12-Month Digital Euro Pilot Starting H2 2027

According to the European Central Bank on July 14, the ECB selected 36 payment service providers to participate in a digital euro pilot program launching in the second half of 2027 and running for 12 months. The trial will span the ECB and 19 national central banks across the euro area, testing real-world payment flows including person-to-person transactions, online and offline payments, and consumer-to-business payments at physical points of sale. The ECB received over 50 applications after opening expressions of interest in March 2026.
