Brazil Reports First Hantavirus Death in 2026 in Central State, Unrelated to Cruise Ship Outbreak

According to Brazilian health authorities, on May 10, Brazil’s central state of Minas Gerais reported one death from Hantavirus infection, marking the country’s first fatality from the virus in 2026. The deceased was a 46-year-old man with a history of exposure to wild rodents in agricultural areas. He fell ill on February 2 and died on February 8. Testing confirmed Hantavirus infection. Health officials stressed this is an isolated case unrelated to the outbreak aboard the cruise ship Hondieres.
