According to Reuters, on July 21, Boeing requested the U.S. government to press the European Union to disclose the terms of a 3 billion euro (approximately $3.43 billion) loan provided to Airbus by the European Investment Bank (EIB). Boeing questioned whether the financing's scale, timing, and purpose are related to Airbus' planned development of next-generation aircraft.
The loan announcement came just four days after the EU agreed to extend indefinitely a five-year aircraft subsidy truce set to expire on July 6. Boeing urged the U.S. Trade Representative to obtain a "complete explanation" of the loan conditions and demanded the EU clarify how it complies with the 2021 ceasefire agreement, which requires any support measures to follow "open and transparent procedures." The EIB denied providing any abnormal assistance, stating the loan is a normal, interest-bearing financing arrangement.
