THIS IS INSANE!!! 🚨

Chat Control just passed in the EU.
They can and will now legally scan any person's messages, emails and photos you send without a warrant
314 MEPs voted against it. Only 276 voted for it. More than half the Parliament said no.
It passed anyway. This was a second reading vote, which means blocking it required an absolute majority of 361 votes, not a simple majority to approve it. Opponents had more votes than supporters and still lost, because they needed 361 and only had 314.
Parliament already killed this exact proposal twice in March. It came back through a rarely used urgent procedure. Patrick Breyer, the Pirate Party MEP who's tracked this for years, called it an unprecedented attempt to revive something Parliament had already rejected.
What it actually does: platforms like Instagram, Discord, Snapchat, and Gmail can now scan your private messages for CSAM without a warrant, through 2028. WhatsApp and other encrypted apps are technically exempt, though critics point out those platforms weren't scanning anyway, so the exemption protects nothing that wasn't already protected.
Here's the number that should worry you more than the vote itself. The EU's own data says mass scanning produced just 36% of all 2024 abuse reports. Germany's federal police found 48% of the alerts weren't criminal at all. 40% of the investigations that followed targeted minors themselves.
A majority voted no. The rule said no didn't count.
