⚽ Does the FIFA World Cup really boost the economy?

The answer is yes—but not always in the way people expect.

The FIFA World Cup typically drives higher tourism, creates temporary jobs, increases spending on hotels, restaurants, transportation, and retail, while also attracting global investment and international exposure. Studies on Qatar 2022 estimated the tournament contributed up to 1% of the country's GDP in the short term, mainly through tourism and broadcasting revenue. Meanwhile, FIFA projects the 2026 World Cup could generate around USD 40.9 billion in global GDP impact and support hundreds of thousands of jobs worldwide.

However, economists also point out that the long-term benefits depend on how well the host country manages infrastructure, tourism, and post-event investments. Without strong planning, many economic gains can be temporary, while hosting costs remain significant.
