U.S. and Iran Deadlocked Over Final 5% of Nuclear Deal Details as Talks Stall on June 9

According to International Crisis Group analyst Naissan Al-Rifai, the U.S. and Iran remain deadlocked over the final details of a nuclear agreement as of June 9. Iran currently possesses approximately 440 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium, falling short of the 90% weapons-grade level but capable of reaching it quickly. The core disagreement centers on both the substance and sequencing of the deal: Iran seeks to defer detailed terms to future negotiations, while Washington demands greater specificity from the outset. Al-Rifai noted that achieving 95% consensus on key points has proven insufficient, as the remaining 5% encompasses the most complex issues, including Iran's uranium stockpile management and the future scope of its nuclear activities.
