According to Google, the company launched a verification feature called Phone by Google on Pixel devices running Android 12 or newer to combat AI-powered phone scams. The app performs a secure handshake between known contacts' phones to confirm call authenticity; if the verification fails, it flags the call as suspicious in real time. Americans lost $893 million to AI-linked scams in recent years, according to the FBI, prompting the move. Google plans to extend the approach across Android devices using RCS, an open standard carriers can implement for broader adoption.
